Our players are diligently preparing to qualify for the Para Panam Games in Lima 2019. They will be participating in various tournaments around the world to earn points in the World Ranking. The qualification period for badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Games has also commenced at the start of this year. This means that our athletes have the opportunity to compete and earn points that contribute to their chances of securing a Paralympic spot for their respective countries.

The first world ranking event is scheduled to take place from March 25-30 in Antalya, Turkey. Following this, four more competitions will be held in Dubai, UAE; Kampala, Uganda; Ottawa, Canada; and Dublin, Ireland. The stakes will be even higher at the World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, which will take place in August.

But the competition doesn’t stop there. Athletes will have the opportunity to earn more ranking points at five additional major international competitions in Bangkok, Thailand; Beijing, China; Odense, Denmark; and Ballarat, Australia. In September, Tokyo, Japan, will host a competition that will serve as a Test Event for the Paralympics. This will allow athletes to familiarize themselves with the venue where history will be made.

Last year’s Asian Para Games set a positive trajectory for many athletes heading into 2019. Pramod Bhagat from India, who finished 2018 as the top-ranked men’s SL 3 player, is a strong contender for victory in Basel. His compatriot, Tarun Tarun, also secured a victory at the Asian Para Games and maintains a top-five ranking in the men’s SL 4 category.

The European Championships showcased impressive performances as well. Lucas Mazur claimed the SL 4 title, securing his position at the top of the rankings. Valeska Knoblauch from Germany emerged victorious in the women’s singles WH 1 category, elevating her to the second spot and closing in on Thailand’s Sujirat Pookkham.

Peru’s Giuliana Poveda Flores, after winning the Parapan American Championships on home soil, now holds the top spot in the women’s singles SS 6 category.
