Badminton Pan America

Bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan Am Games, Taymara Oropesa (CUB), is currently enjoying a remarkable phase in her sporting career as she strives to qualify for the Olympic Games. In celebration of International Women’s Day, Badminton Pan Am is showcasing the achievements of various women from our region throughout the month of March. Their stories are meant to inspire the entire Pan American family.

Taymara’s journey in badminton began at the age of 14, when she transitioned from tennis to a new sport that captured her heart and led to significant accomplishments. Explaining her switch, she said, “I used to play tennis, but I changed sports because the sun was damaging my skin. When I discovered badminton and played it for the first time, I fell in love with it, and that’s where I found my passion.”

Since then, badminton has provided Taymara with countless experiences, including representing her country, immersing herself in diverse cultures, and achieving remarkable results. She cherishes the opportunity to compete in multidisciplinary games, where she has made lifelong connections and learned invaluable life lessons. Above all, the sport has taught her to persistently pursue her dreams and never give up.

One of Taymara’s biggest dreams is to qualify for the Olympic Games, a goal that she actively pursues in various competitions. Though the path is not always smooth, and there may be setbacks along the way, she remains resilient and unwavering in her determination.

“I have faced several challenges throughout my sports career, such as temporarily leaving the national team in 2019. However, I made a comeback in 2023, and this time I returned even stronger after almost four years away from the sport.”

Drawing from her experiences on and off the court, Taymara shares an empowering message for fellow dream-chasers:

“If your dreams are significant, it is because your capacity to achieve them is equally substantial. So, keep fighting until you reach your goal. Along the journey, you will learn many valuable lessons, and the satisfaction of giving your best will always be with you. Above all, remember to enjoy the process.”
