Vietnam’s Pham Cao Cuong and China’s Qin Jinjing faced disappointment in their quest for a quarter-final spot at the Youth Olympic Games 2014. Pham, ranked No. 8 in the Men’s Singles world junior rankings, was unable to advance from Group D after losing to India’s Aditya Joshi. Despite putting up a fight in the second game, Joshi secured victory with a score of 21-16 21-19. Qin also fell short in her Women’s Singles campaign, losing to Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia Hsin. Although Qin won her match against Croatia’s Maja Pavlinic, it was not enough to secure a quarter-final spot as Lee maintained her winning streak in Group C.

On a more positive note, all other favored players progressed smoothly to the next round, with only two singles matches going to three games. In the Men’s Singles quarter-finals, top seed Shi Yuqi will face off against Max Weisskirchen, Cheam June Wei will take on Aditya Joshi, Kanta Tsuneyama will battle Ginting Anthony, and Lee Cheuk Yiu will compete against Lin Gui Pu.

In the Women’s Singles category, Ruselli Hartawan’s victory over Ruthvika Shivani set up a quarter-final clash with top seed Akane Yamaguchi. Other matches include Lee Chia Hsin versus Kim Ga Eun, Ng Tsz Yau against Busanan Ongbumrungpan, and Clara Azurmendi against He Bing Jiao.

Despite their valiant efforts, Luis Ramon Garrido and his Mexican counterpart fell short in their Men’s Singles matches. Garrido, however, expressed gratitude for the experience gained from competing against top-level players. Moving forward, he remains determined to continue his badminton journey, having relocated to Copenhagen to pursue his passion.

In the Mixed Doubles category, surprises arose as top seeds Ruslan Sarsekenov and Akane Yamaguchi were defeated by Andraz Krapez and Alida Chen. Krapez and Chen secured a spot in the quarter-finals with three consecutive wins from Group A. Qin Jinjing, despite her disappointment in the Women’s Singles event, redeemed herself by advancing to the quarter-finals in Mixed Doubles with partner Mek Narongrit.

Further excitement awaits in the quarter-finals, with Cheam June Wei and Ng Tsz Yau emerging victorious against Lin Gui Pu and Kim Ga Eun. These two pairs will go on to face Group D leaders Lu Chia Hung and Lee Ying Ying. The remaining quarter-final matches will feature Kanta Tsuneyama/Lee Chia Hsin against Shi Yuqi/Joy Lai, and Ginting Anthony/Katarina Beton against Sachin Premashan Dias/He Bing Jiao.
