Indians, Kashyap Parupalli and Ajay Jayaram, achieved remarkable victories in their opening-round Men’s Singles matches at the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open today.

Parupalli Parupalli vs. Jan O Jorgensen

In an intense match, Parupalli Parupalli, ranked 23rd, emerged victorious over Jan O Jorgensen, ranked 10th. The closely contested battle ended with a final score of 24-22, 20-22, 22-20 in Parupalli’s favor.

Ajay Jayaram vs. Wang Zhengming

Ajay Jayaram delivered an impressive performance against Wang Zhengming, the recent China Open finalist. With a tight score of 22-20, 23-21, Jayaram secured his win, even after saving two game points in the second game.

Impressive Victories and Surprising Exits

The Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open witnessed some unexpected turn of events. China, a strong contender, suffered losses as Chen Jin (3), Chen Yuekun, and Du Pengyu exited the tournament. Chen Jin, in particular, faced a straight games defeat from Germany’s Marc Zwiebler (21-14, 21-14). With these losses, China’s hopes now rest on Chen Long (2) in the Men’s Singles category. Additionally, Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat put up a good fight but ultimately fell short against young Japanese player Takuma Ueda, with a final score of 19-21, 23-21, 21-16.

Parupalli Parupalli’s Remarkable Match

Parupalli Parupalli’s match against Jorgensen of Denmark was a standout result of the day. Jorgensen displayed resilience, saving four game points in the opening game, but ultimately, Parupalli claimed victory with a score of 24-22. The second game saw Jorgensen fighting back as Parupalli leveled an 18-20 deficit, but Jorgensen managed to clinch it at 22-20. The decider witnessed a reversal of fortunes, with Jorgensen fighting back from 15-19 to holding match point at 20-19. However, Parupalli remained steadfast and secured the next three points to win the match.

Women’s Singles Results

In Women’s Singles, there were some notable upsets as well. Seventh seed Jiang Yanjiao of China was defeated by experienced Japanese player Eriko Hirose in a closely contested match, with a score of 19-21, 22-20, 21-18. Veteran China-born Dutchwoman, Yao Jie, also bid farewell to her career after losing a hard-fought match to Thailand’s Busanan Ongbumrungpan, with a score of 21-8, 20-22, 21-19.

Hong Kong Players’ Struggles

Unfortunately, it was not a successful campaign for Hong Kong players in their home Superseries. Out of seven singles competitors, only Hu Yun managed to secure a victory. The others, including Ng Ka Long, Wong Wing Ki, Chan Yan Kit, Yip Pui Yin, and Chan Tsz Ka, faced first-round defeats. The doubles category also saw early eliminations, with five pairs in Women’s Doubles, including Poon Lok Yan and Tse Ying Suet, and one in Mixed Doubles being knocked out. Hu Yun displayed resilience, defeating world No. 6 Du Pengyu of China with a final score of 21-17, 22-20. Hu will face Abdul Latif of Malaysia in the next round. Wong Wing Ki, who expressed excitement about playing in the grand Hong Kong Coliseum for the second time, was unfortunately beaten in three games by Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto.

Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long Progress

In Men’s Singles, both the top two seeds, Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia and Chen Long from China, easily advanced to the next round. The Men’s Doubles category witnessed a significant upset, as fourth seeds Bodin Issara and Maneepong Jongjit were defeated 21-18, 21-10 by Lee Sheng Mu and Tsai Chia Hsin of Chinese Taipei.

Double Olympic Gold Medalist Shines

Double Olympic gold medalist, Zhao Yunlei of China, performed admirably in both Women’s and Mixed Doubles, advancing to the second round with her respective partners – Tian Qing and Zhang Nan.
