Some of badminton’s superstars will be competing at the 27th Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Korea’s top-ranked Men’s Doubles pair, Ko Sung Hyun and Lee Yong Dae, will be aiming for success, while Sung Ji Hyun, a seasoned BWF Superseries campaigner, will be seeking gold in Women’s Singles. The Koreans have had previous success, winning the World University Badminton Championship team title and multiple medals in various categories.

China will be represented by Olympic gold medallist Tian Qing in Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, along with Gao Huan in Men’s Singles and Sun Yu in Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles. Sun Yu has shown great promise, defeating the defending champion at the Li-Ning Singapore Open.

Thailand’s representatives include Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, ranked 19th in Women’s Singles, and Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, who reached the semi-finals of the Yonex All England Men’s Singles as a qualifier. Pablo Abian Vicen of Spain, fresh from winning a silver medal at the Mediterranean Games, will be competing in Men’s Singles. Lianne Tan, a Belgian Olympian, will also be participating in Women’s Singles.

The host country, Russia, has a strong team led by head coach Klaudia Mayorova. She believes the best medal hopes lie in Men’s Doubles with Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov, who have been performing well recently. Mayorova also noted that Kazan has an exciting atmosphere as the Olympic Games approach and praised the city’s organization and beauty.

Badminton will begin with a team event at the Tennis Academy, followed by the individual competition in all five traditional categories. A total of 20 countries are competing for team honors, and 40 nations have entries in the individual disciplines.

This is the third time badminton has been included in the Summer Universiade program, and it has already been confirmed for the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea.
