In an exciting Women’s Singles match at the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2018, top seed Tai Tzu Ying saved two match points to deny Michelle Li a memorable upset.

The Canadian challenger had a strong start, but Tai Tzu Ying fought back and won the match with a thrilling 23-25, 21-12, 22-20 victory. Despite trailing most of the third game, Michelle Li caught up at 16 and took the lead at 20-18. However, Tai Tzu Ying dug deep and won the last four points to secure her place in the tournament.

Tai Tzu Ying will now face Lee Chia Hsin, her compatriot, in the second round. Lee Chia Hsin defeated Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt with a score of 22-20, 21-11.

In another exciting match, Malaysian qualifier Goh Jin Wei progressed to the second round by defeating World Junior champion Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from Indonesia. Goh Jin Wei’s next challenge will be second seed Pusarla V Sindhu from India, who won against Indonesia’s Hana Ramadhini with a score of 21-13, 21-10.

Other seeded players such as Nozomi Okuhara (Japan), Sung Ji Hyun (Korea), Carolina Marin (Spain), He Bingjiao (China), and Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand) also progressed to the next round.

In the Men’s Singles category, the big story was China’s Lin Dan’s defeat to Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen with a score of 21-15, 21-19. This marks Lin Dan’s second straight first-round loss, following his elimination in the Malaysia Masters the previous week.

On the other hand, Lin Dan’s compatriot, Chen Long, had a comfortable win over Denmark’s Anders Antonsen with a score of 24-22, 21-10. Chen Long will now face Suppanyu Avihingsanon from Thailand. Top seed Viktor Axelsen also had a smooth start, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Jen Hao with a score of 21-13, 21-7.

Local favorites Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo began their 2018 campaign with a comfortable 21-16, 21-16 victory over Thailand’s Tinn Isriyanet and Kittisak Namdash. They will now face fellow countrymen Rian Agung Saputro and Hendra Setiawan in the next round.

In Women’s Doubles, fifth seeds Lee So Hee and Shin Seung Chan dominated their match against China’s Tang Jinhua and Yu Xiaohan, winning with a score of 21-19, 21-7. They will face qualifiers Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Ribka Sugiarto in the upcoming round.

Local hopefuls Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu secured a victory against Tania Oktaviani Kusumah and Vania Arianti Sukoco with a score of 21-6, 21-18. They will now face another local pair, Agatha Imanuela and Siti Fadia Ramadhanti.
