News | BWF Sudirman Cup

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is set to host a remarkable event for delegates from 145 of its 188 member associations in Gold Coast. This annual gathering takes place on the eve of ushering in a new BWF Council, coinciding with the highly anticipated TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup 2017.

The weekend will be a combination of meetings and celebrations in the picturesque Australian tourist destination. The BWF Members’ Forum will kick off the proceedings, offering valuable insights into Australian beach culture, particularly surf lifesaving. Moreover, there will be presentations on topics including the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Capacity Building, Integrity, and a review of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The forum will culminate with the presentation of candidates seeking election to the BWF Council.

The election for the new Council members will take place on Saturday during the BWF Annual General Meeting. Virtual ballots will decide who will fill the 18 available positions out of the 32 candidates representing all five continental confederations. Notably, the BWF President and Deputy President, as well as the Vice-President for Para-Badminton, have already been nominated unopposed. The remaining seats on the Council are held by continental vice-presidents and the Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission.

In addition to these essential meetings, delegates and athletes will come together for a Gala Dinner at The Star Gold Coast hotel. This grand event marks the launch of the World Mixed Team Championships and serves as a platform to celebrate the BWF’s achievements over the past year. During the evening, the BWF will recognize the contributions of individuals who have made significant advancements in the sport. This includes presenting the Distinguished Service Award to Malcolm Banham from England and the Women in Badminton Award to Australia’s Dr. Judith Cousins.

Furthermore, the BWF Council will witness a change in representation as the outgoing Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission, Yuhan Tan from Belgium, steps down. Three positions on the six-member panel will be open for new members. Voting for the vacant seats will take place during the Sudirman Cup, with three women and six men competing for these positions.

This captivating event promises to unite badminton’s administrators and athletes from around the world, showcasing the spirit of the sport and celebrating its progress. The BWF remains committed to advancing badminton’s cause and recognizing the dedication of individuals who have contributed to its growth and success.
