BWF and UNOSDP Collaborate on Grassroots Development

Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) have joined forces in a new partnership aimed at grassroots development. The collaboration will focus on utilizing BWF’s Shuttle Time program and will primarily be channeled through the UNOSDP Youth Leadership Program.

Through their existing support of the Youth Leadership Program, BWF has already conducted Shuttle Time training at camps in Colombia, Germany, and the USA, which has received positive feedback. Building on this success, BWF will now provide resources and tutors to support four Youth Leadership Camps in the coming year. These tutors will deliver an adapted Shuttle Time course to the Youth Leaders, empowering them to bring Shuttle Time projects to their own countries in collaboration with BWF continental confederations and member associations.

The signing ceremony for this partnership took place at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris, coinciding with the ongoing Yonex French Open 2015. UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Wilfried Lemke, and BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer formalized the agreement, highlighting the potential for badminton to positively impact people from disadvantaged backgrounds and provide opportunities for social inclusion.

The Youth Leadership Program aims to teach disadvantaged youth at the grassroots level how to utilize sport to bring about positive transformation in their communities. Badminton, recognized for its potential in accelerating development and peace efforts, will become a valuable asset to young role models striving to make a difference in the world. Lemke expressed his excitement about badminton as a sport and the possibilities it offers, inspired by watching the match of Indian star Saina Nehwal.

Shuttle Time will now be integrated into the curriculum for UNOSDP Youth Leaders Camps. Courses will be developed regionally, utilizing the 17 language versions of Shuttle Time, to ensure an inclusive and accessible approach. BWF is delighted to contribute to the further development of the sport and is committed to providing relevant resources and expertise to empower the Youth Leaders and introduce them to Shuttle Time and its core values.
