Players participating in the BWF World Superseries Finals in Malaysia will now have the opportunity to benefit from instant reviews in badminton matches. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) will conduct a live test of line-call technology, allowing players to make two challenges per match during the season finale. This new camera-based system will be set up on the television (TV) court, enabling singles players or doubles pairs to challenge line calls or umpire overrules.
Players who make an incorrect challenge will lose one of their two challenges, while successful challenges will not result in the loss of a challenge. Challenges must be made immediately after the shuttle has landed and the call made by the line judge, before the next rally’s serve begins. Players must clearly state “Challenge” to the umpire and signal their request by raising their hand.

BWF Secretary General, Thomas Lund, stated, “We know players have been eagerly awaiting the introduction of instant reviews, and we are pleased to unveil one of the options and see how it works.” The BWF has conducted extensive testing during this year’s OSIM BWF World Superseries to fine-tune the system, aiming to add drama and excitement to the Superseries Finals for both players and fans.
The BWF Athletes’ Commission welcomed this development, emphasizing the importance of player involvement in the process. The commission stated, “The players’ satisfaction with the technology will be a key factor in its successful introduction to badminton. Therefore, the Athletes’ Commission welcomes BWF’s continuing efforts to listen to the players’ feedback on the system.”

The review procedure involves ultra slow-motion cameras placed along the court lines, which send images to a control position near the referee. On a signal from the umpire, the operator will display the images to the referee, who will then decide whether to uphold the line judges’ or umpire’s decision or overturn it.
