BWF News

In April 2023, the World Academy of Sport (WAoS) and Carnegiecentre announced the launch of a new cycle of scholarships for the BWF-WAoS Athlete Certificate. This program presents a unique opportunity for young athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 to continue their studies while pursuing their careers. If you’re an aspiring athlete eager to broaden your knowledge and achieve success, this is the chance for you.

Scholarship Opportunities

Over the years, the BWF has been committed to providing scholarship opportunities to players from diverse cultural backgrounds. In 2022, a total of 114 scholarship applications were received from 35 countries across all five continents. These applications came from players competing in BWF-sanctioned or national level tournaments. The program has been instrumental in supporting the academic pursuits of 44 female and 70 male active players who undertook the Athlete Certificate.

Balancing Sports and Studies

Hanuman Pravish, an exceptional young badminton player from Mauritius, recognized the importance of preparing for life beyond sports. As a semifinalist at the All Africa Junior Championship 2022 in mixed and men’s doubles, Pravish enrolled in the program last year. Through the Athlete Certificate, he found the course to be both interesting and helpful. It not only enhanced his badminton skills on and off the court but also taught him the importance of discipline. This program offers a unique balance between sports and studies, emphasizing the need to give full focus to both areas. Looking ahead, Pravish aspires to pursue a career related to badminton. Coaching, in particular, is an area he is eager to explore further.

Enhancing Knowledge and Giving Back

Cheong Kwok Khuen, a junior player from Malaysia, was grateful for the opportunity to enhance his knowledge through the program. As one of the scholars in 2020, he expressed his thankfulness to Carnegiecentre for recommending the online course. The knowledge gained from the program empowered Khuen to organize workshops and encourage children to learn and enjoy the sport of badminton.
