News | BWF World Tour

Just when it seemed like Tai Tzu Ying had overcome her mental obstacles of losing leads and making mistakes, those old challenges resurfaced. Tai Tzu Ying, the world No.2, had been on an impressive winning streak, driven by her determination to stay patient and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

In the semifinals against An Se Young, Tai Tzu Ying struggled to maintain her composure, leaving her visibly distraught. Despite being the better player on the day, she couldn’t close out the match.

An Se Young expressed her relief after the match, admitting that she thought she had lost. Tai Tzu Ying made a series of errors that cost her dearly. In the first game, from a 12-all tie, Tai Tzu Ying made nine consecutive errors, giving her opponent the lead. The same pattern repeated in the second game, where Tai Tzu Ying had a 12-6 lead only for An Se Young to catch up at 14. In the third game, Tai Tzu Ying held a 14-7 lead and even had four match points at 20-16 before faltering.

However, amidst her erratic play, Tai Tzu Ying showcased moments of brilliance with breathtaking shots. An Se Young, still recovering from a knee injury, struggled to keep up with Tai Tzu Ying’s aggressive play. Despite grimacing in pain, An Se Young fought hard. At 18-11 in the third game, it seemed like Tai Tzu Ying had the match in her hands, but the familiar pattern of not being able to finish strong haunted her.

“I feel bad that in the third game I had the lead until 20. I was not resilient enough to close out the match,” said Tai Tzu Ying. “She’s so difficult to play against; it’s hard to break through her defense.”

An Se Young will now face Akane Yamaguchi in the final. Yamaguchi, who has finally recovered from a right foot injury that plagued her for months, defeated defending champion Chen Yu Fei 21-15 18-21 22-20. This will be Yamaguchi’s first final since the VICTOR Hong Kong Open in September last year.

“I’m thrilled to be back in a final after struggling with my injury,” said Yamaguchi. “I’ve been playing this tournament in excellent condition, and I’m satisfied with my performance throughout. Chen Yu Fei is always a tough opponent.”

In other highlights, world champions Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung reached their first final of the year after coming back from 8-16 down in the first game to defeat Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-18 21-16.
