Badminton Pan America

Carmen Giuliana Poveda Flores has always had a passion for sports. From a young age, she was involved in football and volleyball, following in the footsteps of her athletic family. However, her journey in sports took an unexpected turn when she discovered badminton.

At the age of 14, while participating in a tournament with able-bodied girls, Carmen caught the attention of the Peru Sports Institute. They invited her to join the Short Stature National Volleyball Team. Despite the opportunity, Carmen felt restless due to an irregular training schedule. It was then that Isaac Nuñez, the coach of the Peru Badminton Federation, extended an invitation to Carmen to join the Association of Small People of Peru (ASPEPP).

Initially unfamiliar with badminton, Carmen’s determination fueled her desire to excel in the sport. She recalls, “I didn’t know what badminton was, and I couldn’t even hit the shuttlecock. But now I want to win the World Championships.” Carmen’s ultimate goal is to stand atop the podium at the TOTAL BWF World Para-Badminton Championships in Basel.

As the current No. 1 in the women’s singles Short Stature (SS 6) BWF Para badminton world rankings, Carmen has her sights set on becoming the world champion. Her fierce competitor, Rachel Choong, defeated her in the 2017 final, and Carmen is determined to seek her revenge.

Beyond her aspirations as an athlete, Carmen has broader ambitions. She envisions a career as a badminton coach and is studying Production and Direction of Cinema Audiovisual Communications at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Carmen is particularly fascinated by visual effects, inspired by movies like Twilight.

While Carmen faces the usual nerves and pressure that come with being a teenager and athlete, she has found ways to cope. Seeking the help of a psychologist has allowed her to vent her emotions and channel her energy before games. Carmen also believes that her diverse sports background gives her a competitive edge, as she incorporates techniques from various disciplines into her game.

Carmen Giuliana Poveda Flores is a rising star in the world of badminton. Her determination, resilience, and passion for the sport make her a force to be reckoned with. As she pursues her dreams of winning championships and coaching others, Carmen continues to inspire those around her with her unwavering commitment to excellence.
