Text by BWF

Yesterday, the HSBC BWF World Tour announced an adjusted tournament calendar for 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, the TOTAL BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark will proceed as planned from 3-11 October 2020. To ensure the safe return of international badminton, BWF has shared its Safety Protocols & Operating Procedures and Protocols for Players and Team Entourage documents with all Member Associations.

Compliance with these protocols is vital for all stakeholders involved in the tournaments, including players, coaches, organizers, volunteers, media, and technical officials. The implementation of safety measures will create the safest possible environment for everyone.

Key Information:

  • Accreditations for tournament personnel will be divided into three categories or “bubbles” – green, orange, and red.
  • COVID-19 testing will be conducted for key accredited personnel, with the BWF bearing the costs.
  • Participants in the green category must test negative for COVID-19 before leaving their home country and upon arrival at the tournament destination.
  • Minimal contact between the different bubbles will be ensured to reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Any violation of the guidelines will lead to the revocation of accreditations and denial of entry to the venue.

These measures are designed to protect the well-being of all participants and ensure a safe environment during the European and Asian leg tournaments. Teams and participants are advised against returning to their home countries to avoid mandatory quarantine upon their return. BWF has also made provisions for a two-week transition period to safely move the tour from Europe to Asia, including necessary quarantine or screening measures.
