BWF News

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has made the difficult decision, in consultation with local host Badminton Denmark, to postpone the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2020 in Aarhus, Denmark. This decision comes after several teams withdrew from the tournament due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

BWF and Badminton Denmark have been working tirelessly to ensure a safe return to international badminton by implementing stringent safety measures, including a bubble system. However, considering the recent developments related to the pandemic, many teams and players have chosen not to travel to Denmark for the tournaments in Aarhus and Odense.

The health and safety of the badminton community remain the BWF’s top priority. Therefore, after extensive discussions with stakeholders and Member Associations, it has been decided that this year’s TOTAL BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will not take place on the originally scheduled dates of 3-11 October 2020. BWF is now exploring alternative dates in 2021 to host the Men’s and Women’s Team Championships.

Despite the postponement of the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals, the DANISA Denmark Open 2020 in Odense, a HSBC BWF World Tour Event, will proceed as planned from 13-18 October. This event will also serve as an opportunity to implement necessary COVID-19 Safety Protocols and Operating Procedures for future international badminton tournaments.

Unfortunately, the VICTOR Denmark Masters 2020, originally scheduled for 20-25 October in Odense, has been canceled due to logistical challenges.

BWF is currently assessing the feasibility of the Asian leg of the adjusted HSBC BWF World Tour, which includes three tournaments in an Asian location. Further announcements will be made once details are clarified.
