Despite their recent improvement in performance, Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu remain focused on their goal – to continue winning. The world No.7s have reached their third final in four tournaments by defeating Lee So Hee/Baek Ha Na, the eighth seeds, in the semifinals of the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2024. This will be their first Super 1000 title match since the 2022 All England, where they finished as runners-up to Nami Matsuyama/Chiharu Shida.

Zhang and Zheng have been in excellent form, winning the HLYO Open and Kumamoto Masters in the last two months. The only tournament they did not win during this period was the China Masters. Their hard work in training has paid off, as they secured a 21-17 21-17 victory in their latest match.

Interestingly, Zhang and Zheng are currently in a close battle with Liu Sheng Shu/Tan Ning for a spot at the Olympic Games. They were initially in China’s second qualifying position on the Race to Paris rankings but were overtaken by their younger compatriots last month. A win in the final would put them back in the lead, but with three months left in the qualification window, they are taking it one step at a time.

The focus for Zhang and Zheng is on their game rather than dwelling on the implications of the Race to Paris points. They understand that regardless of the final standings, the best pairs from China will represent their country in the Olympics. When asked if they keep track of their points, Zheng jokingly said, “No, we aren’t good at math!” Zhang added, “We just have to play badminton.”
