BWF World Tour: Fredrik Sogaard and Rasmus Kjaer Make Canada Open Final

Frederik Sogaard and Rasmus Kjaer of Denmark reached the final of the YONEX Canada Open 2023, marking their first appearance in the HSBC BWF World Tour title match since their partnership began 15 months ago.

With a hard-fought victory against Japanese third seeds Akira Koga and Taichi Saito, Sogaard and Kjaer secured their spot in the final. The match was a thrilling battle, with the Danes winning 21-17, 14-21, 21-19 at the Markin-MacPhail Centre.

For Sogaard, a silver medalist at the 2015 World Junior Championships, the achievement brought a rush of emotions. Reflecting on their journey, he said, “It’s been a long road for Rasmus and me. We’ve had to compete in many smaller tournaments to get here. This is only our third Super 500 event, so it means a lot.”

Sogaard and Kjaer joined forces in March 2022 and quickly made an impact by winning their very next tournament, the Polish Open. They followed it up with victories at the Dutch, Welsh, and Canadian Internationals, as well as the Denmark Masters this year.

It wasn’t until January that they had the opportunity to play their first Super 500 event after successfully qualifying for the Indonesia Masters. Their second Super 500 appearance at the Thailand Open in May ended in a first-round exit, but their determination paid off in Jakarta when they defeated Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi.

“We’ve performed well in some of the smaller tournaments. We’ve had close matches against some of the top pairs in the World Tour, but we just needed that breakthrough,” shared Kjaer. “The win against Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in the second round gave us the confidence boost we needed.”

Reaching the final puts Sogaard and Kjaer closer to their ultimate goal. They will face compatriots Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who defeated Olympic champions Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin, in the final.

“Our ranking is important to us. We’re striving to break into the top 32 and play in the biggest tournaments,” explained Kjaer.
