The Spanish Para Badminton International II 2022: A Promising Start to the Season

The Spanish Para Badminton International II 2022 has kicked off the 2022 season with a bang, showcasing exciting matches and new on-court partnerships at the Zabalanga Civic Center in Vitoria. The first day of action did not disappoint, as players from different countries emerged victorious and surprised the audience.

Ignacio Fernandez and David Follett: A Winning Combination

One of the standout performances of the day came from the unexpected pairing of Ignacio Fernandez of Spain and David Follett of England. Despite only teaming up a few days before the tournament, they caused a major upset by defeating WH1-WH2 men’s doubles No.3 seeds, Rodolfo Cano and Julio Cesar Godoy, with a score of 26-24 21-18. Fernandez and Follett showcased their skills and teamwork, proving that their partnership has great potential.

Speaking about their collaboration, Follett shared, “Neither of us had a partner, and ‘Nacho’ asked me a couple of days before coming to Spain if we’d like to partner up. The more games, the better, as it’s our first time on court. Obviously, language is a bit of a barrier, but we seem to get it after a few rallies. We clicked and understood what each other meant, like signals and talking throughout. We had some support from the team here, and that really helped us get across the line. We are really delighted.”

With such a strong start, it remains to be seen if Fernandez and Follett can continue their winning streak throughout the tournament.

Chee Hiong Ang: Embracing New Partnerships

Singaporean player Chee Hiong Ang also embarked on a new partnership in the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles category. Just an hour before his first match, Chee was paired up with his new partner by the referees. Despite losing to India’s Ruthick Ragupathi and Manasi Girishchandra Joshi with a score of 21-11 21-8 in Group D, Chee remains optimistic and values the communication and enjoyment that comes with teamwork.

“Communication and having fun is what I look for in a partnership. Encouraging each other is important; that’s really what it’s about. I told my partner to cover the front court as I’m really good at smashing, so I stayed at the back. I want to get as much playing time as I can here. I really enjoyed it,” Chee shared.

On the opposing side, Ragupathi and Joshi, who won the Uganda Para Badminton International 2021 together, displayed their exceptional understanding and synergy. Training at the same place has undoubtedly contributed to their success, as Joshi explained, “It’s helpful we both train at the same place, and that creates a lot of understanding.”
